Adequate padding if you are carrying it short distances. I wouldn't fly with this bag, but it's great for the back seat of the car. The backpack style straps work well for when I don't have a free hand to carry it around in one hand with the handbag style straps. There are plenty of pockets throughout this bag. The main pocket on the front features smaller sub-pockets in order to hold pens, picks, cords, books, etc, and there are actually two smaller pockets inside the case itself.Again, it's not a hard case, so I wouldn't check this in at an airport or train station, but the foam padding will protect it from normal use, being stowed in a car, falling off a table (*gasp*), and other things like that. As far as the color goes, it's actually closer to black than light grey as the picture suggests. The material is very shiny and resembles a heavy duty nylon or canvas.
